How to Stop Calendar Invite Spam
How to Stop Calendar Invite Spam
Have you noticed strange events appearing in your calendar without you ever accepting them? This is calendar spam — one of the newer methods scammers use to get your attention. They send fake calendar invitations that appear directly in your calendar, often with links to scam websites or fake offers.
Why Is This a Problem?
Unlike regular spam that lands in your junk folder, calendar invitations often appear automatically in your calendar. This means scammers bypass traditional spam filters. These invitations typically contain:
- Fake prize or gift card offers
- Links to malicious websites
- Fake “security alert” messages designed to scare you
- Advertisements for dubious products or services
Google Calendar
Change Your Invitation Settings
- Open Google Calendar in your browser.
- Click the gear icon in the top right corner and select Settings.
- Select Event settings in the left menu.
- Under Automatically add invitations, choose No, only show invitations to which I have responded.
Report Spam
- Open the spam event in your calendar.
- Click ⋮ (three dots) and select Report as spam.
- Delete the event afterwards.
Important: Never click “Decline” on a spam invitation — that confirms to the scammer that your email address is active. Report as spam and delete instead.

General Tips to Avoid Calendar Spam
- Never share your email address on untrusted websites or in public comments.
- Never click on links in suspicious calendar events.
- Don’t just delete the event — report it as spam first so the service can learn from it.
- Create separate email addresses — one for personal communication and another for website registrations and newsletters.
- Regularly check your calendar settings to make sure they are correct.
What If You Clicked a Link?
If you accidentally clicked a link in calendar spam:
- Never enter personal information or passwords on the page.
- Close the browser immediately.
- Run a virus scan on your device.
- Change your password on your email account if you’re concerned.
- Enable two-factor authentication if you haven’t already done so.
Summary
Calendar spam is annoying but easy to defend against. The most important step is to change your calendar settings so that invitations are not automatically added. With the right settings and a little vigilance, you can keep your calendar clean and secure.
